Homeschool January week 1

Our first half of the year went pretty smoothly. I am really happy with what the kids are learning and how they are so independent. We did a mid-year show and tell with friends and it was very evident what our strengths and weaknesses were. SO we made a few adjustments for the new year and they seemed to work really well this week. This is was our learning week looked like:

((Reese//5th grade + Nixon//3rd grade))

SCRIPTURE
Reese// Copy work favorite scripture + written thoughts in scripture journal

Nixon// Copy work favorite scripture

MATH
Reese// A lesson a day. Finding equivalent fractions by multiplying by 1, prime and composite numbers, displaying data and reducing fractions.

Nixon// A lesson a day. Fractions, 3 digit subtraction, patterns, line segments, calendar work and graphing.

Monday night Reese did her Tuesday math lesson and Nixon was working on his Language Arts with Kylie so they could get up early Tuesday to ski some powder.

HISTORY
Reese + Nixon// Listened to Well Educated Heart, My American Story Book. They are learning about The American Revolution. They listened to beautiful stories. Then jotted down some of their own notes so they could remember the stories they heard about Liberty and Loyalty, Bessie Fisher and Henry and John Laurens. The art they get to use is absolute beautiful from WEH.

LANGUAGE ARTS
Reese// A loop of Good and Beautiful Spelling and writing workshop. Typing lessons. 5 minutes of memorizing glossary terms each day. 1 page in cursive each day. Write one vocabulary definition each day. Ready tricky words each day. Loop of geography+poems. Reese is memorizing a Shel Silverstien poem: Smart

Nixon// 5 minutes of memorizing glossary terms each day. 1 page in handwriting each day. Write one vocabulary definition each day. Ready tricky words each day. Loop of geography+poems. Nixon memorized a Shel Silverstein Poem: Board

ENTREPURSHIP

Reese// Her class hasn't started yet

TECH
Nixon// Enjoyed setting up this coding robot This is NOT in my wheelhouse of knowledge so I was very nervous but I found comfort in knowing it was for ages 3-8:) and it is the PERFECT first introduction for coding. Nixon, Reese, Crew and Elle all LOVED doing this together.

FINE ARTS
Reese// Piano 5 days a week. She finished a piano theory book and got a reward from her amazing teacher, Mrs. Roskelly.

PE
Nixon// We got out on the Mountain twice this week to ski. It is always a blessing to be out on the mountain and we feel so blessed to do it as a family. Right now Nixon is working on his 180.

Bryce Canyon

We took a 3 day/ 2 night trip to Bryce Canyon in June. It was the perfect weather and amount of time for Bryce. Bryce felt like another planet to me, Mars maybe. It is so dramatically different from anything else I have ever seen. We all loved it so much. We did the main hike starting around 6pm and it took us a few hours. We were not in any sort of rush and let the kids play in this natural playground. We started at Sunrise to Sunset point and went to Wall Street. The switch backs were so fun.

In the middle of these towering red rock walls was a beautiful pine tree.
This hike had so many fun features to explore.

We made it to Queens Garden and finished at the overlook. All 5 of our kiddos, they love being in nature and love hiking. I would say when we start most hikes we have one or two that aren't thrilled with starting the hike but by the end everyone is in their happy place:)

One year old Elle.

The next day we rode bike in Dixie National Forest. We did a 14 mile bike ride starting at this trail head and finished at a camp ground where Conrad and Kylie rode down Thunder Mountain. Which was pretty intense, maybe not the best parenting move. I took the kids and rode down the same was we went up. The kids and I had a great time riding down. Kylie and Conrad felt like falling off the cliff of their ride was a real possibility :/
Yoga at lunch.

JUNE

June was full of gardening, quarantining and boating. We live with The Peterson's, they are the sweetest couple and we get to learn all things gardening and farming from them. They live in our mother-in-law basement. We got to go boating to kick off June together. It was a beautiful night of skiing and scripture study. We like to do family scripture study on the boat- we have a captive audience;)
